Bettino was not only an outstanding sculptor, painter, musician, performer, and scenographer, but also an inspiring mentor and companion whose creative energy and visionary strength have impressed and continue to inspire me to this day. Our shared journey began in 2008 in Istanbul, Turkey (where he brought me along as his first assistant for his sculpture symposia).
There, we realized one of his monumental stainless steel sculptures, a work in which we connected large local boulders, which I carved, with the stainless steel elements. The Turkish locals constantly gathered around us, watching over our shoulders. Even before the sculpture was completely finished, people were already squeezing into the loop to take cool photos. The sculpture turned out to be quite large, and if I recall correctly, we even received an award for it.
One year later, in 2009, our path took us to Baroda, Gujarat, India, where we created a white marble sculpture together. This work was not only an artistic challenge but also a cultural enrichment, as we deeply immersed ourselves in the Indian art scene and gained valuable experience. Thanks to many assistants, the heavy labor was not too difficult for us, but I left a beautiful relief with a dedication on the sculpture. India was fantastic, though the weather was subtropical, and the food took some getting used to, but I loved it. Sculptor Raphael Beil, with whom I have remained in contact ever since, was also part of the symposium.
Bettino not only opened new artistic perspectives for me but also expanded my understanding of international artist communities and symposia. As the founder of AIESM (Associazione Internazionale Eventi di Scultura Monumentale), he created a global network for sculptors that fosters exchange and collaboration. I had the honor of serving as Vice President of this organization for several years, which significantly strengthened my skills in organization and coordination, skills that later greatly benefited me in my work with Sculpture Network.
Our joint travels not only took us to work sites but also to cultural highlights. In Turkey, we visited the Hagia Sophia, and in India, we explored numerous temples and enjoyed the beaches. One particularly cool moment was meeting actress Katja Riemann in India, with whom we took some lovely photos.
Bettino was an exceptionally versatile artist whose works are recognized worldwide. His ability to merge different art forms while always seeking dialogue with the audience makes his work unique. His sculptures are not only aesthetically impressive but also convey profound messages to the world.
I am deeply grateful for the time we shared and the many experiences that enriched me both personally and professionally.
