The uniqueness of the game lies in its ability to break the fourth wall: it’s not just a digital adventure, but players will be invited to physically interact with the city. The project involves local businesses and merchants in the city center: by visiting affiliated establishments, identifiable by a sticker, players will be able to unlock various codes to gain points or bonuses useful for enriching the game and uncovering its mysteries.
This is also the meaning behind Game Over Carrara: transitioning from the virtual to the real to bring new life to the city. The title itself is a play on words between “game over,” the phrase that marks the end of a game, and “over Carrara,” meaning a game “over” Carrara.
It’s a graphic adventure designed to highlight the state of decline of a beautiful city with ancient origins, known worldwide for its white marble, and to draw attention to the urgent need to revitalize a city that has much to offer.
Game Over Carrara was entirely developed by one person, Elvis Morelli, who came up with the idea of “revitalizing the city of Carrara, its beauty, and its history,” as he told us, “through an apocalyptic video game perspective, as a contradiction to the beauty of a city that, like many Italian towns rich in history, is becoming increasingly deserted.”
Thus, the game takes us through a ghostly Carrara, explored through questions, puzzles, and a complex narrative: and as Elvis Morelli further explains, “even in a post-apocalyptic scenario, Carrara remains stunning.” The video game, in fact, takes players on a journey to discover the city’s wonders: the Romanesque-Gothic cathedral, the 19th-century Politeama Theater, Renaissance Alberica Square, and many other places, including our own studio FAC Fronteacciaiocromato!
The first two episodes and the demo of the Christmas version are available for Android, PC, and Mac, and can be downloaded for free thanks to over forty sponsors featured in the game’s storyline, which includes over seventy characters and, as mentioned, many locations in Carrara.
